Big Bold and Bodacious Lavender Australorp. A large breed of Australian origin.
Quite popular for the production of consistent large eggs and also a good choice for the table. Hens can lay up to 300 per year but generally will lay approximately 250.
Australorps can lay for many years and live up to 10 years. The Australorp is a large heavy bird with close fitting soft feathers. It should have a very upright stance, carrying the tail high. The breast is full and well-rounded with a deep, solid body.
The breed is quite gentle in nature. A real pleasure to have on the farm and a great choice for families. They are gentle birds and roosters are non aggressive. Hens are easy to train for laying boxes. Being hardy chickens, they are a great choice for the extreme Canadian weather. They seem to do well under any circumstance.
Australorps go way back to the early 1900s. Back in the day, some Black Orpington chickens were exported from England to Australia for Aussie breeders to cross with various chicken breeds to improve the Black Orpington chickens use for meat and eggs. Australorp chickens weren’t always called Australorps. At one time the birds were just called Australian Black Orpingtons.
