Sparkling Gem
The Mosaic chicken was developed in the early 2000s by a breeder from Gold Feather Farms, located in southeastern Louisiana. The goal was to create a hardy, colorful bird that would thrive in free-range environments while also being productive in terms of both meat and egg production. The breed is a combination of various heritage breeds which has been kept secret. Althought I do suspect hmong played a role in the developement.
Although not a typical heritage breed. This was an interesting unique selection due to its blue skin and earlobes. Darkish meat which is flavourful as a duel purpose bird.
Physical Characteristics
Size: Mosaics are medium sized birds. Hens typically weigh around 5 pounds (approximately 2.3 ), while roosters weigh between 7 (approximately 3.2 ).
Feathering: The breed is known for its striking plumage, featuring a mix of colors, including white, black, and red, which gives them a mosaic-like appearance. The variety in feather color is one of the breed's most appealing features.
Comb and Wattles: Mosaics have a single comb and bright red wattles, similar to many other dual-purpose breeds, which not only enhance their looks but also indicate good health.
Egg Production
Egg Color: The color can vary slightly, with some eggs being lighter or darker brown.
Annual Production: On average, Mosaic hens can produce about 200 to 250 eggs per year. This productivity makes them favorable for both backyard and small-scale farmers.
Egg Size: The eggs generally are medium sized.
Temperament: Mosaic chickens are known for their friendly and curious nature. They adapt well to free-range environments but can also thrive in coops. Their calm disposition makes them suitable for families and backyard settings. They are generally good foragers, which allows them to find a significant portion of their diet when allowed to roam.
